ArtShed in a nutshell
ArtShed is a small but growing business founded in 2010 by artist Kathy Evershed. Finding that her log cabin studio in a leafy corner of her garden had far too much charm and personality to keep all to herself, Kathy opened the doors to her first art class in the Summer of 2010. ArtShed now runs classes in primary schools, parties, seasonal workshops, popular holiday camps and classes for adults.
We aim to make our activities FUN above all else but have a serious intention behind our lesson plans. We want to counter the sometimes prevalent notion that art is “what you do when you’ve finished” or “doing whatever you want”!
Instead we aim to teach children basic artistic skills that will equip them to be better and more confident artists while encouraging them to explore their own unique creativity. A typical lesson plan will seek to introduce one key technique (eg how to draw a house in 3D) and then allow children complete freedom as to what their 3D house looks like.
This ‘freedom within boundaries’ approach has allowed the children we teach to produce artwork of a quality far beyond their own expectations and really bolstered their confidence and enjoyment of art.
Artist and founder of ArtShed, Kathy Evershed runs art classes for children and Adults, in a beautiful private garden in St Albans, Hertfordshire.
Who is ArtShed for?
ArtShed activities are currently available for children aged 6–13yrs (we do take 5 year olds at our discretion) and there are classes for adults too!
What are ArtShed classes like?
Art classes in the ArtShed in St Albans have a maximum of 10 children and benefit from a unique garden setting with plenty of room to throw paint around! Classes are booked termly in advance and each term children will complete one main painting on canvas and one three dimensional project alongside other projects. Art techniques and theory are introduced along the way as tools to pick up if they wish.
Art classes in schools are bigger with up to 25 children and are booked termly in advance. Each child has a sketchbook and happily spends the beginning of the class doodling. Projects utilise a wide variety of media with emphasis placed on fun and experimentation as a form of relaxation after a long day at school!
Do we need to bring any art equipment?
All materials and aprons are provided but children may bring a snack from home if they wish.
How much does it cost?
Classes in the ArtShed run during term time on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 4:00 to 5:30pm. They are suitable for ages 6–11 years and cost £12 per session. Fees are paid termly in advance.
Art classes in schools cost £7/£8 per child (depending on school) for a one hour session. Typically there are 10-12 sessions in a term and these are paid for termly in advance.
